Brandon Twp.- About 50 Brandon High School students will bring 1940s New York City to life as they take the stage as ‘Guys and Dolls.?
The musical, a romantic comedy, was adapted from a short story by Damon Runyon (‘The Idyll of Miss Sarah Brown?). Frank Loesser composed the music and wrote the lyrics for the Broadway musical about crapshooters who want a game, dodge police and one who makes a bet and falls in love, while another’s fiancee is a chronically ill nightclub performer, whose condition is brought on by the fact she has been engaged to him for 14 years.
‘I wanted to showcase the fine gentlemen we have,? said BHS Musical Director Deborah Wolfe-Sebetic, on why she chose ‘Guys and Dolls? for this year’s musical. ‘I thought this was the year to do it, we have some really nice male talent.?
Steve Francis, a BHS junior in his first musical, is playing Sky Masterson.
‘He’s a cool, sly guy? a ‘playa,?? says Francis of his character. ‘He’s the highest roller of them all.?
Sebetic calls the musical ‘family-friendly? and for all ages. She believes some older audience members will appreciate classic songs, which include ‘Luck Be a Lady Tonight,? ‘A Bushel and a Peck,? and ‘I’ve Never Been in Love Before.?
The musical will also feature embellished choreography.
‘It’s very light-hearted and fun,? said Sebetic. ‘It reminds you of the era and takes you into the time period.?
Katie Lenartowicz, BHS senior, is playing Sarah Brown, someone she says she is not.
‘I’m a good kid, but she’s a missionary and doesn’t do anything wrong,? she said. ‘She’s very prim and proper.?
The role of Adelaide is played by Nicole Miller, a senior who says she likes her character, because she is fun and very dramatic. She believes the audience will enjoy the musical.
‘There’s a lot going on and it makes the story interesting,? she said. ‘The audience will like how it all comes together at the end.?
