Village storage violations

Ortonville- The village currently has about 29 violations of a section of the zoning ordinance pertaining to the storage of boats, utility trailers, travel trailers, and motor homes.
‘I’m sure residents are unaware such an ordinance exists, or they would take steps to do things properly and not be in violation,? said Village Manager Ed Coy. ‘There have been a few complaints from all over the village.?
Coy reminds residents that according to section 7.04 of the village zoning ordinance, the following items may be stored in residential areas, but must be stored behind the front building line and outside rear and side yard setbacks: a boat less than 16 feet long; a small utility trailer; a travel trailer less than 20 feet long and less than 7,000 pounds; and a motor home, which is 20 feet long or less. All items must be owned by the occupant of the property.
Boats, travel trailers, and motor homes that exceed the above stated size and weight limitations are not allowed to be stored in a residential district at all.
Coy said resident have until Aug. 22 to come into compliance and then a letter will be sent notifying them of violations. Enforcement proceedings may include fines up to $500 and/or incarceration up to 90 days.
