Volunteers needed for township CERT training

Brandon Twp.- The Community Emergency Response Team is seeking volunteers.
CERT Leader Lee Stewart says the group is accepting names of people interested in taking a 6-week training course this spring.
‘They will learn about disaster preparedness and coping with disasters such as large snowstorms, hot spells, ice storms, tornadoes, major power outages, and how CERT prepares their own families, as well as taking care of their neighbors,? said Stewart.
CERT, which currently has about 22 active volunteers, has been in existence in the township for three years and assists the Brandon Fire Department in a variety of ways, including checking on senior citizens during severe weather; setting up displays for CreekFest; providing medical support during the Memorial Day Parade; and providing crossing guards during Septemberfest and Halloween in the village.
Stewart says the training course will run on either Tuesday or Thursday nights from 7 p.m.-9:30 p.m. in April or May. CERT trains monthly as a group for two hours on a Thursday evening.
‘I think it’s a good program and well worth doing,? Stewart said. ‘We need more volunteers, particularly for the village. It’s fun and a nice chance for folks to have a social event as well as do something for public service.?
Details: (248) 627-4000 and ask to be put on the list for CERT training. Volunteers should be Brandon residents, at least 18-years-old and will be subject to a background check.
