Cats sail over Brandon

Even though the Oxford Wildcats are enjoying a 4-1 record in the Flint Metro League, the team has had some hard-fought victories.
Last week’s 24-6 win over Brandon was the first time this year that the Cat’s could loosen up a bit and give everyone a chance to play.
The Wildcats scored the first 17 points of the game and a very tenacious defense held the Blackhawks to only 125 yards of offense.
Senior quarterback Nick Tombrella led the Wildcat’s offense, running 15 times for 85 yards and two touchdowns.
The Wildcat’s Geoffrey Charles scored first for Oxford on a 14 yard run with 11:21 left in the second quarter.
Matt Versteeg kicked the first of his three conversions. Versteeg also connected on the longest field goal of his varsity career, a 41-yarder, with 6:03 left before halftime.
Tombrella had a seven yard run with 4:13 left in the second quarter to give Oxford the 17-0 advantage.
Brandon scored its only TD of the game as the half expired. The Blackhawks missed on a two-point conversion attempt.
Tombrella added his second TD as the third period ended to give the Cat’s their 24-6 lead.
The Oxford signal-caller also threw for 90 yards on 7 to 12 passing.
Austyn Sylva ran for 57 yards on five rushes and freshman Prescott Line had 47 yards rushing on eight attempts.
The Friday, the Wildcats will travel to Lapeer East for a 7 p.m. game. East is 3-2 in the Metro League, while Oxford is 4-1.
