Another sign of Michigan’s economic woes can be found in the front window of Clarkston Cafe, where a sign annouces the Main Street restaurant ‘closed for retooling.?
‘It was a different Michigan two-and-a-half years ago when we restored it,? said Curt Catallo, owner of Clarkston Caf? and Clarkston Union. ‘I think now it requires some retooling just to make it accommodating in the current and future Michigan economic climate.?
Catallo said they’re doing some renovating inside but ‘nothing wholesale,? as well as merging two menu concepts into one general menu that’s ‘more accommodating.?
‘I think the menu we opened with was ambitious and we’re going to miss it, but we want people to realize it’s an accessible restaurant,? he said. ‘You’ll still know it’s not a chain, trust me.?
Staff members had to find jobs elsewhere, but Catallo said he has kept them close, because the caf? is still serving receptions and showers already scheduled.
‘Our goal is to open it in time to bring all the staff back because they’re really special people who cared about the job and they all did a fantastic job,? he said. ‘When they talk about Main Street America, it doesn’t get more Main Street America than this. It’s not just Main Street America in concept, when you talk about Clarkston it’s the real deal.?
