Church reaches out to neighborhood

Volunteers from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Saints off Waterford Road are hosting their second ‘Neighbor to Neighbor? give-away on April 25.
‘We started it last year. It was just an idea that we came up with because a lot of us in doing our spring cleaning had a lot of things that we wanted to donate,? said Julie Johnson, event chairwoman. ‘We didn’t want to just give it to the Salvation Army, not that it’s not a good organization, but we wanted to make sure it got to people that really needed it and we didn’t want to go through the hassle of a garage sale
‘So we decided to come together as a congregation and use our church building as a host site for a garage sale, but not charge anything for it.?
Johnson said they know there is an even bigger need for things this year and hopes anybody who is need or knows someone in need will come.
‘We found last year that people were very considerate, they thought there was somebody who might need something more then them and they were hesitant to take things,? she said.
‘We really feel that if you feel you have a need for it, then feel free, that’s why it’s here. The only thing we discourage is it making a business of it.?
Items available will include clothing, household items of all sorts, electronics, appliances, large furniture items, and books. The large furniture items will be displayed on a bulletin board, with contact information, so people can arrange pickup at a future time.
Whatever items are left at the end of the day will be donated to three local charities the church is working with.
‘We are hoping to make it any annual event,? said. ‘It gives people a chance to do their spring cleaning and give to people who are truly in need.?
The giveaway will be from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. The church is located at 5464 Waterford Road.
