A 40-year-old Brandon Township man who fled police will serve one year of probation.
Kenneth Scott Harrington was sentenced May 15 on the charge of fleeing and eluding, third degree and also received 40 hours of community service. He pleaded guilty to the charge on April 15.
According to police reports, a Brandon deputy on patrol eastbound on Seymour Lake Road at about 2 a.m. on March 7 saw a truck with sparks underneath it. As he turned around to follow the vehicle and make sure it was OK, the truck, later found to be driven by Harrington, sped up and turned north on S. Hadley Road. The deputy followed, activating his emergency lights, but the truck continued to accelerate. Due to road conditions, the deputy was unable to catch up, but kept the suspect vehicle in sight. After a mile and a half, the deputy observed the truck abruptly turn left into a driveway in the 1300 block of S. Hadley. As the deputy turned into the drive, he saw the truck had hit a phone pole in the yard, knocking out electricity to a barn.
Harrington got out of the truck and ran, with the deputy in pursuit. Harrington climbed a wooden fence, with the deputy advising him he would be tasered. As he jumped, the deputy deployed the taser, but missed, and lost sight of the suspect on Galahad Road. The license plate of the vehicle, which had a smashed windshield with several hairs stuck in it, came back to Harrington, whose wallet was also found in the center console.
