Brandon Twp.- H.T. Burt Principal Kristy Spann quotes the Greek philosopher Aristotle when talking about Lisa Gunnels.
‘Aristotle said we are what we repeatedly do? excellence is not an act, but a habit, and for Lisa, excellence is a habit,? says Spann.
Gunnels was recognized for her excellence as an H.T. Burt special education parapro during the June 8 school board meeting when she was presented the Betty Campion Distinguished Support Service Award.
The award, sponsored by Oakland Schools, the Oakland Schools Education Foundation and the Oakland County School Boards Association, was established in 1990 and named in honor of a former Oakland Schools boardmember.
Nominees share the following traits: they are exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable and skilled members of a local school district’s support staff; they go above and beyond the call of duty; they are supportive of the learning environment; they play an active and useful role in the community; and they have a minimum of five years experience in their current position.
Gunnels has served as a parapro for six years at H.T. Burt, the past four in special education.
Spann notes that Gunnels works directly with students who require additional support and generally with kids who require someone compassionate, caring and understanding.
‘She helps them in academic and social settings, wherever they need help,? Spann said. ‘She’s there to help guide them as necessary, and gauges from moment to moment, hour to hour, what they need to be independently successful.?
‘Simply put, being a special education paraprofessional is about me doing a job that I love, and working with an awesome group of students whom I adore,? said Gunnels. ‘I am honored to have received the Betty Campion Support Service Award!?
