Roxanne Todd is quite possibly the perfect government worker. She’s polite, eager to complete any and all tasks, and best of all, she doesn’t cost the taxpayers a dime.
Since December, the 1971 Oxford High School graduate’s been working part-time at the village office on W. Burdick St. organizing and filing paperwork, answering the phone and greeting folks at the counter.
‘I’ve been helping out wherever they need me,? said Todd, who’s actually doing an internship.
Back in July, she received her online degree in business administration from Kaplan University.
Unable to find a job in her chosen field, Todd decided to volunteer at the village office when the municipality started looking for free help.
‘I thought the best thing to do rather than sit around doing nothing is to get some experience in my field, so I have a better chance of getting a real job,? she explained. ‘Without experience, my degree is useless.?
Todd has about two-and-a-half years of office administration experience working for the County Line Reminder, a now-defunct newspaper that covered Ortonville, and for Landstar Homes in Burton.
She’d like to find a job in office management, ‘but right now, everywhere I’ve applied, they’re looking for like five years experience.?
So far, Todd is really enjoying her time with the village.
‘I’m having a blast. I really am,? she said. ‘I’ve run into all kinds of old classmates and neighbors.?
Being able to do something positive for Oxford, the town in which she raised her children and still lives, is another bonus of her internship.
‘I have a great love for this community,? Todd said. ‘It’s nice to be able to help out the community I love as well as get a little experience for future job opportunities.?
Todd plans to stay with the village until a paying position pops up somewhere else.
‘For now, I’m just sitting tight and seeing what I can do to help out here,? she said.
