Oxford High School is a much more environmentally-aware place these days thanks to the efforts of three students.
Seniors Emily Holland, Megan Tilley and Danielle Bauman spearheaded a ‘Going Green? project that got the whole school recycling and pledging to help save the planet.
All three belong to the high school’s DECA Club, which consists of students studying marketing, management and entrepreneurship. For their DECA public relations project, the trio decided to launch a pro-green campaign.
‘Oxford hasn’t really done anything about the environment lately, that we knew of,? Tilley said.
Last week, the trio held a recycling contest among the school’s third-hour classes that netted more than 900 pounds of paper, 2,000 plastic bottles and other assorted plastic items, approximately 2,500 used batteries and 125 cell phones.
‘We were not expecting as much as we got,? Bauman said.
‘One guy even brought in a DVD player to recycle,? Tilley noted.
To help further promote their message, the ladies sold approximately $300 worth of T-shirts with slogan ‘Go Green or Go Home? and green bracelets that carried the message ‘Make a Difference.?
Holland, Tilley and Bauman got OHS art students to design various pro-green logos, one of which will be featured on a reusable shopping bag that will eventually be sold at local businesses.
The ladies also walked in the Oxford Christmas parade last month and handed out flyers with environmentally-friendly tips such as ‘turn off the water when you brush your teeth? and ‘unplug appliances when you’re not using them.?
The final part of their campaign will be unveiled in the coming weeks when they post a pro-green message on the M-24 Message Center billboard, just south of Drahner Rd.
