Normally, the roasting of marshmallows is an activity associated with campfires, but some inventive Lakeville Elementary students put a twist on it for Earth Day (April 22).
Using recycled pizza boxes and Pringles potato chip cans, students in the school’s Earth Club built solar cookers to roast marshmallows both big and small.
The cookers were lined with aluminum foil to reflect the sun’s warming rays and covered with plastic wrap to lock in the moisture.
‘We were just teaching them about developing countries and how they actually use solar cooking for their foods,? said Tina Young, the Earth Club’s adviser.
Besides using alternative energy to make snacks, Lakeville students also planted three Eastern White Pine trees on school grounds, making for an Earth-tastic day.
