In 1951 Clarkston Service Mother’s Club donated a three and half ton memorial rock to Independence Township, in honor of Clarkston service men and woman who had given their lives for their country.
The rock is a piece of history,” said Independence Township Supervisor Dave Wagner. “I think it’s very important that we continue to honor that history.”
With the help of Al Dorn and other members of Independence Township Fire Department, the assistance of Clarkston Auto Body with a wrecker, City DPW and equipment, along with Kevin Daniels and Tony Hool from Independence Township’s Facilities and Maintenance, the rock was relocated from the former township hall at 90 N. Main Street to the new township hall off Walden Center Drive on June 23.
‘We did take our time to make sure exactly where we wanted to place it. As you notice it is kind of a garden atmosphere, which will be a perfect location for that type of memorial,? Wagner said.
‘If someone was willing to donate two or three park benches in memories of a loved one they lost in one of our wars, I think that would be something that would be very nice in that area.?
The other rock memorial, which was donated by the Clarkston Rotary club will be donated to the City of Clarkston and possibly placed in Depot Park.
‘I do believe is the appropriate spot for that particular monument,? Wagner said. I appreciate once again the working relationship with the village. It is excellent we’ve been very good partners. We know we can continue this in the future because it is very necessary in these poor economic times.?
