Board looks at home-based business ordinance

Have a home-based business? The Orion Township Board of Trustees voted Monday to suspend enforcement of ordinances regulating such businesses while it looks into a request made by the ZBA.
The issue was brought to the board by Trustee Mark Crane, who also sits on the ZBA.
At a recent ZBA meeting, Crane said, the owner of a home health care agency’who operates only the administrative functions of her business from home’asked for a variance so she could employ a part time secretary.
Current township policy’zoning ordinance # 78, section 27.02’states that up to ten customers or clients can come and go on any given day, but a home-based business cannot employ anyone who doesn’t live in the home.
The board referred the issue to the medical marijuana committee, which consists of Crane, along with Trustee John Steimel and Supervisor Matthew Gibb. A report is due by Nov. 15.
Township Treasurer Alice Young said she was glad to see the township ‘joining the 21st century.?
‘With so many laid off, a lot of people have gone to home based businesses,? she said.
