Brandon Twp.- At the beach, poolside, or in a hammock could all be choice spots to enjoy a book during warm weather.
But whether it is summer, fall, winter or spring, if you love books, there is a place for you in the Seasoned Readers Book Club.
The club was started about a year ago at the library, 304 South St., by Teen and Adult Librarian Jeanette Marks. She began the club after several adults expressed interest.
‘Seasoned Readers is not a reflection on the age of participants, but based on the frequency of gatherings,? laughs Marks. ‘The community is very busy and said meeting once every few months is fine.?
‘Novel Destinations? is the theme of the library’s summer reading program and in keeping with that theme, instead of meeting at the library as they normally would, club members will next meet at 4 p.m., Aug. 4 at The Coffee Zone, 830 S. Ortonville Road to discuss the book ‘Cutting for Stone? by Abraham Verghese.
The novel, like all Seasoned Readers Book Club selections, was chosen by Marks, who will also lead the discussion.
The book, she said, is set in Ethiopia and is about twin brothers born from a secret love affair between an Indian nun and a British surgeon.
‘The brothers come of age and the same woman drives them apart,? said Marks. ‘It’s very intriguing.?
In total, the Seasoned Readers Book Club has about a dozen members, and averages about six to seven in attendance at meetings. Discussions are about 90 minutes. Other books that have been read and discussed in the club include ‘The Art of Racing in the Rain? by Garth Stein and ‘Major Pettigrew’s Last Stand? by Helen Simonson.
Marks tries to select titles that will interest a variety of ages and both men and women, although the group currently is comprised of all women.
Frequently, there are book discussion guides, and the group expands on those questions and members bring their personal experiences that relate to the characters or storyline.
‘We’re a very congenial group,? said Marks. ‘All adults are welcome, you don’t have to be a highly well-read, literature-based person. If you enjoy reading, you are welcome.?
