In an effort to save a good chunk of money, Oxford Township will no longer be automatically mailing receipts to every single property owner who pays their tax bill.
Last week, the township board voted 7-0 to end the practice beginning with the July tax bill.
“There’s no other community that does it,” said Supervisor Bill Dunn. “There’s no other community wasting money (on this).”
Treasurer Joe Ferrari estimated this decision will save the municipality between $10,000 and $15,000 annually in postage, printing and staff time.
The township is exploring a way to allow residents to have free on-line access to their tax receipts if they want them.
Right now, residents can obtain a copy of their receipt through the Oakland County Property Gateway web page, but there’s a $2 fee, according to Ferrari. The address is www.oakgov.com/propertygateway.
“It is a savings (for the township), but there’s a lot of people (who) don’t go on-line and do that,” said Trustee Sue Bellairs. “What happens to them?”
“They can call the township and we’ll mail them one,” Dunn replied.
Residents can also visit the township hall at 300 Dunlap Rd. and request a receipt in person. Or they can ask to have a copy faxed or e-mailed to them.
