All the signs of spring are here. Flowers are blooming. Days are becoming sunnier and warmer. Local vandals are running amok.
This time, the victim was Oxford Village.
Vandals spray-painted graffiti all over the Scripter Park beach house, the Department of Public Works (DPW) garage, the vacant industrial property at 98 S. Glaspie St., and the dugouts and portable toilets at the baseball fields on S. Glaspie St.
“They got us pretty good,” said DPW Superintendent Don Brantley.
It all happened sometime during the overnight hours between Monday, May 9 and Tuesday, May 10.
“This really turned my crank,” Brantley said. “I was pretty upset because we’re getting ready to open (the beach) for the season.”
Thanks to a private donation, the village is offering a $200 reward for tips that lead to the arrest and conviction of whoever is responsible for this crime. Anyone with information is asked to please call either the village police at (248) 628-2581 or the village office at (248) 628-2543.
“You can’t have anything nice,” Brantley said. “They’re ruining it for everybody.”
Using graffiti-remover and a power-washer, two DPW workers were able to eliminate all of it except for the markings on the beach house. They spent a combined seven hours on the job, which cost the village an estimated $250 in labor, plus $30 for the graffiti-remover, according to Brantley.
Brantley said DPW workers spent part of Friday, Monday and Tuesday painting over the beach house graffiti. He estimated the project cost the village approximately $600 in labor and paint.
All sides of the structure were covered in tags, which are the personalized signatures of graffiti vandals. Judging by the tags, it appears two individuals might be responsible. Someone who goes by the name “Fang” and someone else who uses the name “Onyx.” All the Fang tags were made using white paint, while all the Onyx tags were done in blue.
The DPW has already taken steps to make the park area and its facilities more open and more visible from the road. Brantley said trees and bushes have been trimmed and removed.
The beach house has exterior lighting, so it’s not cloaked in darkness when the sun goes down.
Brantley is in discussions with village Manager Joe Young and Police Chief Mike Neymanowski about installing security cameras aimed at the beach house and DPW garage.
Homeowners who live on the west side of S. Glaspie St. and on the other side of Round Lake are encouraged to keep a closer eye on the park and immediately report any suspicious activity to village police.
“I know the police department rolls through here (on patrol), but they can’t be everywhere all the time,” Brantley said.
This is the third major incident involving public property being vandalized in a little over a month. The other two happened at the Oxford High School football stadium’s press box. One took place in April, while the other was just last week. Thousands of dollars worth of property damage occurred in both cases.
Oxford Community Schools is offering a $500 reward for tips that lead to the arrest and conviction of the individual or individuals responsible for these crimes. Anyone with information is asked to call Oakland County Sheriff’s Det. Shane Freiberg at (248) 969-0369.
