A pair of Addison Township brothers suspected of perpetrating a spree of vandalism and theft in Oxford Township between Saturday night and early Sunday morning is facing potential criminal charges, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
The brothers, ages 18 and 21, are suspected of spray-painting a whole slew of private and public property on N. Oxford Rd. and in the Waterstone development, and stealing items from vehicles.
Their alleged crime spree was brought to an abrupt end when they crashed into a parked vehicle in Waterstone, according to the sheriff’s office.
The list of victims and property damage is a long one.
It includes a home at the intersection of N. Oxford and Gardner roads that had its storm door, a window and its siding defaced. A crude drawing of a penis and an obscene phrase were spray-painted on the house’s siding in royal blue.
Across the street from the damaged home, two pieces of heavy construction equipment belonging to Consumers Energy were spray-painted with racial slurs, anti-homosexual comments and the slogan “Donald 4 Prez,” an obvious reference to Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump.
A road sign in the area was also spray-painted with a derogatory remark regarding U.S. President Barack Obama.
Over in Waterstone, four condominiums along Stony Lake Dr. sustained damage. A cement lion statue, an exterior light and a garage door were all defaced with spray paint. The garage door had the phrase, “Satan is welcome here” written on it.
On Chelsea Blvd. in Waterstone, some items were stolen from two vehicles, according to sheriff’s reports, including a ring with an appraised value of $8,000, some personal and business checks, and some cell phone chargers.
Although the reports weren’t yet finished, sheriff’s Det. Shane Freiberg said there were two other incidents of vandalism.
Three mailbox units, each containing 17 individual mailboxes, on Chelsea Blvd., for the Golf Highlands subdivision were spray-painted with an anti-gay slur, an obscenity and a swastika, according to Joe Farrell, a homeowners association board member. He said so far, a couple hundred dollars has been invested in the cleanup effort, but it could end up costing more.
The sign for Oakwood Lake Township Park on Oakwood Rd. was spray-painted as well.
“We’ve already painted over it,” said Parks/Rec. Director Ron Davis.
According to the sheriff’s office, the brothers’s spree was cut short when they crashed the 1999 green Honda they were driving into a 2015 Ford Escape parked on Bellwood Ct., near Brooks Dr., around 2:15 a.m. Sunday.
In a report by Freiberg, he noted that while at the crash scene, he “observed spray (paint) cans in the (brothers’) vehicle which matched the royal blue used on the home (on N. Oxford Rd.).”
Cans of black and greenish/yellow spray paint, the same colors used on the construction equipment and road sign, were also found inside the vehicle, according to the report.
The stolen items were recovered near the Honda, according to Freiberg.
The investigation remains open. Charges are pending.
