Oxford’s powerhouse thrower Connor Bandel continued his winning ways at the New Balance Track and Field Nationals held June 17-19 at North Carolina A&T State University in Greensboro, North Carolina.
Once again, Bandel’s sheer strength propelled him to achieve a couple of career bests.
The 2016 OHS graduate won the discus throw with a toss measuring 202 feet 7 inches. That’s 3 inches more than his previous best.
Bandel came in fourth in shot put with a throw that measured 68 feet 10.75 inches. His previous best was 67 feet 5.75 inches, achieved at the state meet held June 4 in Hudsonville.
Bandel’s shot put performance at the state meet set a new Michigan record.
At the Midwest Meet of Champions held June 11 at Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, Bandel was the champion in both the shot put and discus throw.
In shot put, his throw went a distance of 67 feet 4.25 inches. He broke the meet record, set back in 2010, by 2.75 inches.
In the discus throw, his toss measured 185 feet 9 inches.
Bandel currently holds the OHS record in both shot put (68 feet 10.75 inches) and discus throw (204 feet 2 inches).
Over the course of his high school career, Bandel has earned four state championships, four regional championships, four county championships and is an eight-time league champion.
This fall, Bandel will attend the University of Florida where he will continue throwing for the Gators.
