Walter LeRoy Smith, of Oxford, passed away June 16, 2016 in Sarasota, Florida. He was 79.
Walter was born in Leonard, MI on July 24, 1936 to Alva and Edith (Leach) Smith. He married Janet Somerville in August 10, of 1957. Walter went to work as a plumbing apprentice in 1953 and worked for Trevarrow Plumbing for 48 years.
Following retirement, as was many generations tradition, they were snowbirds and spent summers in Oxford, MI and winters in Venice, FL where Janet preceded him in death in 2006.
In 2011 he married Doy Sue Dawson and they shared a great love. They moved to Sarasota, Florida in January 15, of 2015. They enjoyed spending their retirement together.
Walter is survived by his loving wife Doy, daughter’s Lori Sussmen, Deborah (Joseph) Hobbs, Lisa (Chris) Tait, Son’s Timothy (Lisa) Smith, and David (Shawn) Woodsmith, also survived by15 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Walter was preceded in death by his children Susan Smith and Julie (Chris) Kozma.
Walter worked hard and enjoyed life. His passions included gardening, travel, camping, fishing, horseshoes, playing cards and board games and square dancing.
He might have come by and fixed something for you. He had a knack to help family or friends if something was broken.
Family will have a Memorial Service at Hunter Creek Cemetery at 11:00 am on July 17, 2016 followed by BBQ at the Hobbs.
