A 32-year-old Addison Township man and registered sex offender is accused of sexually assaulting a minor girl and possessing child pornography depicting this same girl, plus many other unknown juvenile females.
Bryce Adam Haviland was arraigned July 12 in Rochester Hills 52-3 District Court on a total of nine charges – second-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a person under the age of 13 (a 15-year felony); capturing/distributing images of an unclothed person (a five-year felony); three counts of possession of child sexually abusive material (a four-year felony); and four counts of using computers to commit a crime (a seven-year felony).
Bond was set at $250,000 cash with no 10 percent option. His next court date is scheduled for July 26 before District Judge Julie Nicholson.
Haviland allegedly sexually assaulted this girl at his house in 2012. The girl, who lives in Warren, was 8-9 years old at the time of the alleged incident and is the daughter of Haviland’s now ex-girlfriend, according to Oakland County Sheriff’s Sgt. Keith Weir, commander of the Addison substation.
Weir said the girl told her mother what happened in late May of this year and the Addison substation was contacted about it in mid-June.
On July 8, sheriff’s investigators executed a search warrant at Haviland’s 2512 Texter Rd. home. He was arrested and a number of electronic devices were confiscated.
“We took five phones, a tablet, a laptop and a tower computer,” Weir said.
When interviewed by investigators at the substation, Haviland confessed to the sexual assault, according to the sergeant.
The sheriff’s Computer Crimes Unit examined one of the smartphones and found approximately 200 sexually-abusive images of children, according to Weir. “Only a small portion of those are (of) our victim,” he said.
The rest are of unknown juvenile females. Investigators are working to find out who they are.
“We have to make every attempt to identify the victims in each one,” Weir said.
The Computer Crimes Unit will also be examining Haviland’s other electronic devices.
“We only went through what we had to prove this case because there’s so much information,” the sergeant explained. “We did what we could to meet the threshold for our complaint.”
“Typically, it takes weeks to dump a phone because they’re backlogged down there, but because of the nature of this incident and his confession leading us to the one specific phone, they dumped that one phone,” Weir noted. “They haven’t dumped all the rest yet.”
In addition to the images, video footage was also found on this phone. Weir said Haviland filmed, without their knowledge, his three adult girlfriends and the minor victim while they were using restroom facilities, showering and changing clothes.
“He was setting the phone to record (and) hiding it in bandanas, towels and primarily, a tissue box,” the sergeant explained. “He would hide (it) in the restroom of his home and other places. We believe one place was a hotel (based on) the videos.”
Haviland has a criminal record.
In 2008, he was convicted of accosting a child under the age of 16 for immoral purposes, a felony, in St. Clair County. As a result, he was placed on the state’s sex offender registry and was to remain on the list until March 2033. Haviland was also convicted of a felony firearm charge in 2002, Weir said.
This saddens me to read this i hope the victims are able to get the help they deserve. But what i have an issue with is he’s been to all school functions at my childs school. Apparently oxford schools allows sex offenders on their property.
