Oxford High’s junior varsity and varsity sideline cheer teams came home from cheer camp with more than just a fresh grasp on some new stunts.

They also came home with awards.

North American Spirit hosted the Spirit 2-Day Power Camp in Frankenmuth, Michigan on Aug. 2 and 3.

Though North American Spirit has several cheer camp options available, the Spirit 2-Day Power Camp offers two full-days of stunt and skill training.

The varsity sideline cheer team won the Spirit Award, which recognizes the most positive and helpful group at camp. Recipients of the award were chosen by a vote of attending coaches.

There were eight teams from around Michigan attending the camp.

“(The award) is not so much about what they can do physically; it’s about your attitude and whether you’re helpful to those around you and the spirit of the teams around you,” said Varsity Sideline/Competitive Cheer Coach Erynn Pauli.

Both the varsity and junior varsity teams also took home blue trophies, which were presented to the teams with the highest knowledge of new stunts at the end of camp.

Pauli says she could not be more proud of the girls.

Between the intense heat of summer, a rigorous 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. stunt schedule both days, and challenging stunts to learn, the girls had a lot to work through.

“You get hit a few times when you’re learning something new. Your flyer might come down funny and you get smacked in the face, you get a knee to the eyeball and things like that… but they never stopped working through the frustration. (Seeing the girls work) through the frustration and being determined and to bring home those skills… it was really awesome to see the kids do that,” said Pauli.

Pauli, who was appointed Varsity Sideline/Competitive Cheer coach in May 2016, said she’s excited to continue coaching the girls and learn more about them as they continue to build through the season.

“I’m really proud. It was a really good kick-off to the season. Being a new coach, it was just a really great start to our program and our season and it’s made me feel really excited about what these kids have to offer,” she said.
