The Oxford Wildcats extended their winning streak to three games with an impressive 41-13 victory over Troy Athens Friday night.
The win came during homecoming weekend in front of a full house.
The game started out slowly as each team found moving the ball difficult. The weather was not a factor yet and each defense was able to prevent the opposition from doing much of anything.
Athens would score first but fail the conversion to open a 6-0 lead.
The Wildcats would match with a touchdown run by senior running back Ethan Williams late in the first and a failed attempt for Oxford on the point after and the score was 6-6 going into the second quarter.
Each team would go back and forth and Oxford had a difficult time with penalties yet again.
The teams would trade scores and were tied at 13. Oxford claimed the lead late in the first half taking a 20-13 lead to the locker room. That would be the closest the game would be through the second half.
Halftime featured a wonderful performance from the Oxford High School Marching Band that was inspired by the most recent Star Wars film “The Force Awakens.”
As it was homecoming, the tradition of each high school class creating a float to a specific theme continued and this year’s theme was Dr. Seuss.
Students created floats featuring The Cat in the Hat, Horton, and other Seussian tales and they were towed in front of the crowd.
Following the halftime break, the weather started to turn and the rains came.
Despite the change in weather, the Wildcats would not relinquish the momentum that they started late in the first half and they wouldn’t allow Athens to score again.
Williams would exit the game with a leg injury and junior DeVon Hudson would keep the running game going scoring two touchdowns of his own on the ground.
It was a total team effort for Oxford as they played their best game from start to finish on the season.
The push for the playoffs continues this Friday night, October 14 at home for the Wildcats versus Southfield A&T at 7 p.m.
