Oakland County Sheriff’s officers are investigating a rash of robberies involving unlocked vehicles in the Oxford area.
Between Oct. 10 and Oct. 15, there were seven reports of items stolen from vehicles.
Most of the robberies occurred in the Waterstone development. Thefts have taken place on Chelsea Blvd., Chelsea Ct., Golfside Dr., Coventry Ct. and Eastlake Trl. There was also a theft reported on State St., which is connected to N. Oxford and Lakeville roads.
Stolen items included money (one vehicle contained $15,000 in cash in a bag), purses, wallets, laptops, forms of identification, prescription drugs, power tools and golf clubs.
In addition, things were stolen Oct. 13 from a vehicle parked in the 3000 block of Noble Rd. in Addison Township, according to the sheriff’s office.
The vehicles’s owner, a 39-year-old resident from Addison Township, told sheriff’s deputies $7,500 in cash had been stolen from the center console, along with his laptop computer.
In light of these events, Sheriff’s Sgt. Frank Lenz, of the Oxford substation, reminds residents to remain vigilant and lock their vehicles.
“Out of all the (recent reports), not a single one was committed by breaking into a car through a window or compromising a lock,” Lenz said.
“They were all open vehicles. The best way to defeat this is to just lock your car door. You shouldn’t have to but, unfortunately, it only takes one bad guy to force us all to have to lock our doors.”
Lenz also recommends installing exterior, high-definition cameras near home driveways and stay in close communication with neighbors.
Anyone with information or potentially useful security footage can call Lenz at (248) 858-4951.
