Oxford Township’s parks and recreation department will team up with Oxford Community Schools to address questions from the public regarding proposals on the Nov. 8 ballot.
Two public forums will be held.
The first is 7 p.m. Wednesday, October 26 at the township Hall (300 Dunlap Road) while the second one is on Thursday, October 27 at 7 p.m. at Oxford High School’s performing arts center (745 N. Oxford Rd).
“Everyone is invited and encouraged to attend the upcoming community forums and to . . . learn the facts and have your questions answered,” said Assistant Superintendent of Business and Operations Sam Barna.
The parks department has a $2 million bond proposal on the ballot, the proceeds of which would be used for capital improvements.
If approved, Stony Lake, Seymour Lake, Powell Lake and Oakwood Lake parks would all have things repaired, replaced and added.
The proposal calls for paying off the bond debt over a period of 10 years. The estimated property tax levy to do this is 0.27 mill and, if approved, it would begin this December.
One mill is worth $1 for every $1,000 of a property’s taxable value.
The school district has two property tax proposals on the ballot. One is a renewal a 17.8078-mill renewal that, if approved, would be levied against all non-homestead property in the district.
Non-homestead properties include businesses, commercial and industrial properties, second homes, vacation homes, rental properties and vacant land not adjacent to an owner’s homestead property. This would not be levied against principal residential (homestead) or qualified agricultural properties.
The other proposal is a tax increase, or restoration, of 0.1922 mill on all non-homestead property. If the increase and renewal are both approved, it would bring the total non-homestead levy up to the maximum 18 mills, which the state assumes all districts are levying when it calculates how much money each receives from Lansing.
