It’s been seven straight years of domination by Novi Detroit Catholic Central, but the Oxford varsity wrestling team finally did it.
On Saturday, the Wildcats won the 57th annual Oakland County wrestling championship held at Lake Orion High School.
Oxford scored a total of 268.5 points, besting Clarkston with 238 points and Holly with 198 points. Catholic Central placed sixth with 151.5 points.
“It felt good (to win the trophy). We’ve had a pretty successful wrestling program for many years… we’ve won state titles and state runner-up but we haven’t won the Oakland county in 16 years. Last time we won it was 2000 and we only won it once. We have a really strong sophomore class this season. For those young kids to go out and compete at a varsity level… some of them won it and some of them placed really high and so I was really proud of our sophomores,” said Head Coach Paul McDevitt.
A total of 46 teams competed in the tournament.
Oxford senior Byron Schlickenmeyer (215 pounds), sophomore Trent Myre (152 pounds) and sophomore Devin Trevino (160 pounds) each won titles for the Wildcats, which had three other finalists in junior Ryan Miller (140 pounds), junior Sergio Borg (135 pounds) and junior Daltan Myers (119 pounds).
Also contributing to the team score were:
Sophomore Matthew Curtis (103 pounds) came in fifth place with 13 team points
Sophomore Liam Hillary (112 pounds) came in sixth place with 17 team points
Senior Captain Jacob Call (125 pounds) came in fifth place with 20.5 team points
Sophomore Garritt Mahoney (130 pounds) scored 5 team points
Sophomore Caleb Tabert (145 pounds) took third place with 20 team points
Senior Ethan Moll (171 pounds) scored 4 team points
Senior Dallas Winkelman came (189 pounds) in sixth place with 11 team points
Senior Campbell Coker (285 pounds) came in sixth place with 15 team points
The team is 1-0 overall in the Oakland Activities Association (OAA).
The Wildcats will go up against archrival Lake Orion at a quad meet on Jan. 4, at 5:30 p.m. at Lake Orion High School (495 E. Scripps Rd.)
