Two Oxford Village residents hosted a barbeque competition with fellow barbeque enthusiasts last weekend at the “Snowbird Shake Off.”
The event was organized by Dean and Daryn Haist, who often take part in barbeque competitions under the name “Stinky D’s Fine Ass BBQ.”
“We decided to put this event on because we love barbeque,” Daryn said. “We don’t have any barbeque competitions in the winter and it’s nice to get back together with our BBQ family.”
Seven local groups of Kansas City Barbeque Society (KCBS) members and a panel of judges came together in the name of delicious barbeque during the eight hour-long competition.
The KCBS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and enjoying barbeque, is the world’s largest organization of barbeque and grilling enthusiasts with over 20,000 members worldwide.
Each team was required to season and cook the ribs on-site, turning in a minimum of six ribs for judges to taste-test.
The first-place winner was Clarkston resident Kevin LaRocque, of Kevlar BBQ.
Finishing second was Oxford resident Tom Somers, of Bad Habit BBQ.
Judges included Bob and Joan Westbrook, Bill Gailey, Phillips Kent and Oxford resident Joe Ferrari.
Also judging was Clawson resident Steve “Bubba” Coddington, the “2013 BBQ Person of the Year” at the National Barbecue Association Conference in Texas and Head Pit Master at The Woodpile BBQ Shack.
The Haists were thankful to Bill and Lynn Steffey, of West Side Brakes & Front End in Oxford, for sponsoring the event.
