Iraq veteran to speak at Lakeville Cemetery ceremony

Oxford Village resident Kate Logan, a U.S. Army veteran who served in Iraq from February 2007 through March 2008, will be the guest speaker at the Memorial Day ceremony in Addison Township’s Lakeville Cemetery on Saturday, May 27.

While the upcoming holiday weekend affords Americans a fun opportunity to “enjoy the freedoms that we have,” like traveling and gathering with friends and family for barbecues and picnics, Logan hopes folks will take a moment to remember “that people have laid down their lives” to make all this possible.

“It’s so easy to forget the horrible things that happened in history in order for us to have the lives we’re so fortunate to have now,” said the 2000 Oxford High School graduate.

That’s why Logan believes it’s important for everyone – civilians, veterans and current service members alike – to honor past generations, particularly those “who have made the ultimate sacrifice for our country.”

It’s also vital to remember, according to Logan, that the life we know and the liberties we cherish can disappear without people who are willing to stand up and protect them.

“(Things) can always change very quickly and we need to stay vigilant,” she said. “Every generation needs to carry the flag and do the work.”

While stationed in Iraq, Logan spent time with the 1st Infantry Division. Part of her duties involved searching Iraqi female civilians if they were suspected of concealing weapons or explosive devices inside or beneath their clothing. She was even part of a team that captured a local terrorist, whom she described as a “high value target.”

These days, she works as one of 10 regional coordinators for the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency. Her job involves helping veterans and their family members in Oakland, Macomb and Wayne counties gain access to services, benefits and resources.

Logan continues to serve her country as part of the Michigan National Guard, while raising four children.

Saturday’s ceremony in Lakeville Cemetery is scheduled to begin at noon, but folks are asked to start gathering at 11:30 a.m.

The ceremony will consist of vocal and instrumental musical performances by the North Oakland Concert Band, Oxford Middle School choir students and Lauri Lowe.

Prayers, a reading, the placing of a memorial wreath, a 21-gun salute and the playing of “Taps” are also on the agenda.

A potluck lunch will follow. Please bring a dish to pass. Meat will be provided.
