It’s no secret that cops love coffee and Sheriff Mike Bouchard is no exception.
Oakland County’s top cop is inviting area residents to share a cup of joe with him, enjoy some light snacks and “tell me what’s on their mind” when he visits the Oxford Meijer store with his mobile command center on Wednesday, June 14.
He’ll be hosting a meet-and-greet, dubbed “Coffee with the Sheriff,” in the parking lot from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
“I try to move around every month,” said Bouchard, who’s served as sheriff since January 1999. “It’s fun to get around to different parts of the county and chat with folks – see what issues they might have that we can help with.”
Bouchard runs one of the largest sheriff’s offices in the nation with approximately 1,300 employees and an annual budget of more than $141 million. There are county substations located in 10 townships, including Oxford and Addison, and two cities.
The sheriff’s office has provided law enforcement services to Oxford Township since 2000 and dispatch services for the Oxford Fire Department since April 2014. On Nov. 30, 2016, the sheriff’s office began answering and dispatching all calls for Oxford Village Police.
Bouchard said the meet-and-greet gives him an opportunity to take the public’s “temperature” with regard to the job his personnel are doing. “I think our team’s doing a great job, but any team, whether it’s us or the (Cleveland) Cavaliers, can do better,” he said.
Bouchard relishes this opportunity to interact with citizens and “deepen relationships” with them.
“I’m out (in public) a lot, but usually, it’s (giving) speeches,” he explained. “This is more of a listening thing.
“I encourage people to come out and (tell) us the good, bad and the indifferent, so we can find (out) how we can better serve our communities and better connect (with people). That’s pretty much the point of it.”
