The school will operate Monday through Friday and consist of two classes, one for 3-year-olds, led by teacher Denise Evanson, and one for kids ages 4 and 5, led by teacher Jessica Kuykendall.
According to Preschool Director Stevie Murphy, together, these classes will be able to accommodate up to 22 children per day. There will be 10 kids in the 3-year-old class and 12 students in the 4-5-year-old class.
“We have about 10 signed up so far,” she said. “We got a late start with registration.”
There are many options available to fit parents’ schedules, needs and budgets.
Parents can choose to send their children to LakePoint Preschool anywhere from two to five days a week.
“If you’re a working parent and you need five days, we’re here,” Murphy said. “But if you’re a stay-at-home mom who just wants a little bit of extra education (for her kids), it’s a two-day minimum.”
Parents can enroll their children for half-day preschool sessions, which run from 8 a.m. to noon and cost $28 per day, or all-day sessions (preschool, plus extended care) that go from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and cost $50 per day.
Murphy, who holds bachelor’s degrees in early childhood education and Biblical studies, said what makes LakePoint Preschool unique is its use of HighScope curriculum.
“It focuses less on playtime and more on getting kids ready to start public school,” she explained. “Most of the preschool options (available) are more daycare options, so I’m not sure how much they’re really helping the kids get ready for kindergarten.”
Founded in 1970 and based in Ypsilanti, HighScope is a nonprofit organization that serves young children and families around the world by focusing on curriculum development, child and program assessment, publishing, professional development and research for the early childhood community.
According to HighScope’s website www.highscope.org, this educational approach emphasizes “active participatory learning.”
“Active learning means students have direct, hands-on experiences with people, objects, events, and ideas,” the HighScope website states. “Children’s interests and choices are at the heart of HighScope programs. They construct their own knowledge through interactions with the world and the people around them.”
