A business that dedicates itself to helping people find the perfect home is now hoping to help the estimated 30,000 people who have been displaced from their homes following Hurricane Harvey.
The staff of Century 21 Affiliated are trying to meet the needs of those affected by collecting crucial supplies at two of their locations this week– including their Oxford office.
Items may be dropped off at Century 21 Affiliated in Oxford (850 S. Lapeer Rd.) and in Lapeer (421 S. Main St.) beginning on Wednesday, September 6 and will be collected from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Mondays through Saturdays, until Saturday, September 16 at both offices.
Supplies collected by Century 21 Affiliated will be donated directly to the Houston Food Bank, a nonprofit hunger relief organization located in Houston, Texas, and will be transported by truck to those that need them.
The heavy rainfall associated with Hurricane Harvey has caused catastophic flooding in Texas. Houston has been hit especially hard with many residents need
ing rescue from rising flood waters.
Witnessing the reports of the damage caused by the storm prompted Managing Broker Jack Tubbs to organize the supply collection.
“Reading the reports that are coming in from Texas and seeing the devastation… hearing about how many people are going to be displaced and homeless… seeing the level of devastation was what prompted us to take action,” said Tubbs.
Packs of bottled water, diapers, toiletries, toilet paper, paper plates and bowls, plastic cutlery, and low-salt/low-sugar non-perishable foods are all on the list of supplies requested by the Houston Food Bank.
Romeo-based company, Blue Water Trucking, Inc. has donated two 53-foot trucks and drivers to the cause, according to Tubbs.
“I see this as a two-fold initiative. I hope this will aid the victims of Hurricane Harvey in their time of need, and also… seeing all the different news reports of how this country is becoming divided on politically and ideologically… I hope that this will show that we can still come together as a community and help those who are in need,” Tubbs added.
