Conventional wisdom says couples who play together, stay together.
But what about couples that steal together?
A Flushing couple that was supposed to be working on cable lines last week, instead spent their time allegedly swiping packages from porches after they had been delivered to homes in Oxford and Brandon townships.
Daniel Terrill-Gregory Smith, 26, and Jaymee Elaine Hunter, 24, who live together as boyfriend and girlfriend, were arrested, then arraigned in Clarkston 52-2 District Court.
Smith is facing a felony charge of larceny for stealing property worth at least $1,000, but less than $20,000. If convicted, he faces up to five years in prison and/or a fine of not more than $10,000 or three times the value of the stolen property, whichever is greater.
He is accused of stealing a Samsung Galaxy S8 cell phone from a home on Oakwood Rd. in Brandon Township, a box of makeup from a home on Eden Lake Ct. in Oxford Township, a LED lamp from a home on Stony Lake Dr. in Oxford Township and an Apple iPad Pro from a home on Island Lake Crescent in Oxford Township.
Hunter was charged with larceny for stealing property valued between $200 and less than $1,000, a misdemeanor. If convicted, she faces up to one year in jail and/or a fine of not more than $2,000 or three times the value of the stolen property, whichever is greater.
She is accused of stealing the Samsung Galaxy S8 cell phone, LED lamp and the box of makeup.
Both Smith and Hunter were released on personal bonds.
According to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, at the time of the alleged crimes, Smith and Hunter were employed by the Brighton-based AMcomm Telecommunications, Inc., a contracting firm that assists Michigan-based cable operators.
When interviewed by investigators, both suspects admitted to the thefts, according to the police report.
In the report, Hunter told investigators they were driving around in their company truck, doing work in Oxford, Brandon and Lapeer, when they stole the packages. Their job was to bury cable lines after they were installed at homes.
“She said that while they were traveling from job to job, they would look for homes that had packages on the front porch,” the report stated. “When they would see a package, she would pull into the driveway, (Smith) would get out and steal the package and then she would drive off.”
According to Hunter’s statements to investigators, two of the items – a dress and bottle of lotion – were returned to the stores from which they were purchased in exchange for gift cards, which were then traded for a lesser amount of cash at a business in Warren that offers check cashing and payday loan services.
Hunter admitted to investigators she and Smith sold the stolen Samsung Galaxy S8 for $300 to a buyer on Craigslist, then used $150 of it to purchase 1 gram of heroin from a drug dealer in Detroit, the report stated.
In his written statement to sheriff’s investigators, Smith indicated he suffers from “a nationally recognized mental illness” and is “a heroin addict.”
“If you do not suffer from it, you will never understand the strife of it,” he wrote. “It literally grabs ahold of your brain and makes you do insane things. And although I am not blaming my mistake on anyone or anything other than myself, I believe if I was not in the throes of this, I would be a law-abiding citizen as I had been since the age of 20.”
Also, in his verbal and written statements to investigators, Smith indicated he sold the stolen Apple iPad Pro for $150 on Craigslist.
The Oakwood Rd. home from which the Samsung Galaxy S8 was allegedly stolen had a video security system that streams footage to the owner’s cell phone.
According to the police report, the footage shows a white male wearing an orange T-shirt and blue jeans removing a FedEx package from the doorway, then entering a white truck on Sept. 19.
This video was posted to Facebook, which resulted in a person who works for AMcomm Telecommunications contacting the homeowner’s live-in girlfriend.
In the report, this individual told investigators he was “positive” the truck shown belongs to AMcomm and “almost positive” it was Smith in the video.
Smith’s driver’s license photo was compared to the male suspect in the video.
“It was very obvious that it was the same person,” the investigator wrote in his report.
According to the sheriff’s report, footage of Smith taking a package filled with makeup was also captured by a video doorbell system at the house on Eden Lake Ct.
