Three Oxford boys bowlers advanced to the individual state finals March 3, with two ultimately finishing among the top 10 that day.

Seniors Tanner Cartner and Christian Cartner, along with sophomore Zach Barrows all made it out of regionals to bowl for a singles title.

More than 600 boys started in the 2018 bowling season. The field was whittled down to the top 60 bowlers by the start of the MHSAA Championships.

Each bowler would bowl six games and the top 16 would move on to head-to-head competition.

There, they bowled two full games, with the total pin leader advancing.

Barrows shot well, according to Head Coach J.R. Lafnear, and finished in the 30th position. He had a high game of 243, but fell 45 pins short of advancing.

Tanner Cartner totaled 1238 and averaged 206, allowing him to move on in the 7th seed.

Christian Cartner totaled 1190, averaging 198 to qualify in the 13th spot.

Christian Cartner won his first round match 368 to 334 over Keegan Ratobyiski, of Chippewa Valley.

He then faced off against Matt Buck, of Rockford. Christian Cartner battled hard, but was unable to get by Buck, who went on to win the singles title.

Tanner Cartner also won the first match with a 409-to-277 score over Spencer McCallum, of North Farmington.

He also beat Jacob Frogge, of Lake Shore, 435 to 304 to advance to the final four.

In a seesaw match, he finally lost to Ryan Reid, of U-D Jesuit, with a 369 to 362 score.

“These guys were outstanding today. A top 4 and 8 finish is a big accomplishment. Zach was top 30, as well. I was honored to be their coach today,” Lafnear said.
