The Wildcats ran past visiting Anchor Bay with a 16-1 score March 24 at Wildcat Stadium, upping the team’s season record to 2-0.
“Hopefully, we’ll continue growing and playing the Oxford way,” said Head Coach Greg Normand. “As our confidence grows, we’ll play faster. While we’re making simple mistakes right now, I’d have to say that weather has played a part in our improvement.
“It’s been crazy cold and we’ve really only had two or three good outside practices… As the weather gets warmer, hopefully, we can loosen up and continue to hone those lax skills,” Normand said.
Oxford scored early and often that evening– building a 6-0 first quarter lead, pushing it to 9-1 by halftime and using a running clock by the middle of the third quarter.
Sophomore attack Matt Pullman had six goals and two assists to pace the Wildcats’ offensive showing, while Collin Grzanka knotted three goals and three assists. Oxford’s Max Parsons and Thomas Wandrie had two goals (two assists), while Seth Grove, J.J. Poolton and Logan Vachon (three assists) each had a goal.
Defensively, junior goalie Gio DeBlasi only allowed one goal on eight shots to secure his second win of the young season. Oxford’s defensive was paced by Sam Barrott’s five ground balls, while playing suffocating defense. Sophomore Shane Zyngier had three ground balls.
“Sam is quickly becoming a nightmare for the opponent’s best player because he’s fast enough to stay with the opponent and skilled enough to take balls away,” said Jeremy Maslowsky, Oxford’s defensive coordinator.
Oxford won the ground all war 36-14, while Logan Vachon was 12-2 on face-offs.
This was the Cat’s second win of the week.
On March 21, the Wildcats team took all– walking away with a solid 22-0 win against Lake Fenton in a season opening non-conference game.
Oxford travels to Notre Dame Prep on March 27 with a non-league matchup before coming home March 28 to host Lanse C’reuse North.
