A new opportunity to appreciate and access one of Oxford’s scenic lakes is now open for public use.

A T-shaped observation/fishing pier extending into Powell Lake has been constructed by the Oxford Township Parks and Recreation Department as part of the $2 million bond proposal approved by voters in November 2016.

“Everybody that’s come out here has just loved it, from the youth to the adults,” said Parks/Rec. Director Ron Davis. “It turned out great.”

The 1,250-square-foot wooden structure is easily-accessible from the Polly Ann Trail, north of W. Drahner Rd.

This portion of the trail has an asphalt surface, making it the “ideal place” for people in wheelchairs and senior citizens to easily access the pier, according to Davis.

“I’m glad the Polly Ann Trail (Management) Council agreed to do this partnership with us,” he said.

The pier has two areas where the railing’s height is lower, so as to allow people using wheelchairs the opportunity to fish for everything Powell Lake has to offer, from bluegill to pike.

It also features built-in bench seating for folks who just want to kick back and watch a sunrise, observe some wildlife, or take a break from traveling the 16.9-mile trail.

“You get the most picturesque view of the lake,” Davis said. “You can sit here, reflect and meet people.”

Davis is hoping the watchful eyes of folks who frequent the adjacent trail will help discourage would-be vandals from damaging the pier. He noted it’s much more visible there than it would have been inside Powell Lake Township Park.

The parks and recreation department spent approximately $57,000 on the pier, which is much less than some of the bids submitted for the project.

Davis said there was one bid that was between $90,000 and $100,000.

“We pitched in and helped with a lot of (the work),” noted Park Superintendent Jeff Kinasz. “That keeps our cost way down when we do that.”

As always, Davis is grateful to the township and village taxpayers for their “continued support,” which makes projects like this possible.

“They bought into the vision and trusted us,” he said.
