Village trash bills going up a dime

One thin dime.

That’s the amount by which the garbage bill is increasing for the 1,087 residential customers in Oxford Village.

Last week, council voted 4-0 to tack on a 10-cent administration fee, which means customers will now pay $10.60 per month for rubbish and recycling services provided by Green for Life (GFL) Environmental, Inc.

The fee was recommended by village Manager Joseph Madore.

“The coordination of services with the rubbish contractors, as well as handling customer concerns, and processing payments takes up (village staff) time . . . which is not being covered by fees being collected for the service,” wrote Madore in a May 8 memo to council. “It is estimated that the cost to administer this service is about $4,600 per year.”

The 10-cent increase is expected to generate a little more than $1,300 annually for the village.

Per the GFL contract, village customers will begin paying $10.82 per month for collection services on Sept. 1 of this year and $11.15 per month from Sept. 1, 2019 to Aug. 31, 2020.

Oxford’s new administration fee will raise those prices to $10.92 and $11.25, respectively.

Residential customers aren’t the only ones who will see an increase in their garbage bill.

As part of their motion, council also voted to charge commercial users an administration and maintenance fee that totals $3,354 annually. That cost is to be “spread over the entire commercial district,” wrote Madore.

Republic Services currently provides commercial dumpster services to the village at a cost of approximately $2,950 per month, which is spread amongst the users.
