Canine Academy, an Oxford-based business, is letting the dogs out for a great cause.

Folks are invited to attend its “Pet a Pup” fund-raiser on Saturday, June 2. Plenty of adorable puppies will be available to pet and play with from noon to 3 p.m. at 925 Legacy (formerly known as the Legacy Center) in Oxford.

A number of dogs and puppies will be there to cuddle, snuggle and enjoy during the event, including ones available for adoption through the K9 Stray Rescue League and some trained pooches from the Canine Academy.

There will be food, a raffle and music throughout the fund-raiser. An adorable great dane named Scooby will also be providing kisses at a kissing booth.

There is no admission fee and no registration is required.

All proceeds will benefit the nonprofit K9 Stray Rescue League. The Canine Academy will provide a free four-week training class to each dog that gets adopted that day and their new family.

At Canine Academy, owner Lisa Farlin said they have been working with newly-adopted dogs of all ages for the last 22 years to help them adjust to their new homes

She hopes to raise awareness about the importance of training through this fund-raiser.

“We tend to see a lot of dogs that come from rescues and we want to educate owners on what they can do beyond (adopting them). First you rescue, but then you need to train, so that hopefully they won’t end up back in the rescue,” Farlin said. “We just want to educate people on the whole process. You bring the dog into your home and then the work begins to make sure that he has a successful life and that you can enjoy your life with him to the fullest extent.”

The K-9 Stray Rescue League’s ongoing dedication to placing dogs into loving homes is what inspired Farlin to want to give back to the nonprofit.

“The K-9 Stray Rescue League places a tremendous number of dogs every year and we want to help them finish the story,” Farlin added. “Adopt and train so that you can have a happy ending with your dog. I’m hoping this event brings people of all ages and walks of life.”

Farlin encouraged parents with children who “are a little timid around dogs” to bring them to the fund-raiser, so they can have a “positive experience” with some professionally-trained dogs who are “under control, calm and relaxed.”

Folks who choose to attend are asked to please leave their own dogs at home as this is a “humans only” event, Farlin noted.
