A 70-year-old Addison Township man was arrested June 29 by Oxford Village Police for allegedly driving drunk in the downtown.
According to the police report, this was his third offense and a preliminary breath test administered at the scene with the driver’s consent showed his blood alcohol content was .238 – nearly three times the legal limit of .08.
It all started when police received a call to check on a man who was seen on S. Washington St. “falling over” while he was walking and getting into a black 2017 Jeep Wrangler.
The officer spotted the vehicle waiting at the M-24/Burdick St. intersection, after which it headed east on E. Burdick St. He observed “it was not driving straight and was swerving to the right.”
During the traffic stop, the officer could “smell a strong (odor) of alcohol.” The driver admitted to drinking, but told the officer he had only consumed “two drinks,” the report stated.
When asked for his identification, the driver twice handed credit cards to the officer.
According to the report, the driver failed field sobriety tests, including counting backwards from 10 to 4, walking heel to toe and finally, standing on one leg, while counting out loud.
During the last test, the officer wrote, “(The driver) was able to say (the number) one and fell to the ground.”
After the driver refused to take a second breath test at the police station, the report indicated a sample of his blood was obtained by Oxford Fire personnel and sent for testing.
The driver was transported to Oakland County Jail.
