After a season full of making their presence known in their new league, five athletes from the ladies’ swim and dive teams competed at the state level.
The girls’ efforts garnered them 29th place accolades. Utica Eisenhower and Livonia Stevenson tied with Oxford in placement.
The Wildcats’ A Relay team for the 200 Medley and 400 Freestyle races this season were junior Ashlee Weltyk, sophomore Grace Charnstrom, sophomore Jenna Fistler and freshman Cali Schnur. At states, the ladies took 22nd in the 200 Medley with a time of 1:52.50 and 24th in the 400 Freestyle with a time of 3:42.35. The 400 Freestyle set a new Oxford record.
Three of the four girls also took on individual events. Weltyk had the strongest finish of the day with her 11th place finish in the 100 Backstroke. She swam the race with a time of 56.68. Weltyk also competed in the 200 Individual Medley, in which she earned 26th place with a time of 2:11.34. Her 200 Individual Medley time also set a school record.
Fistler competed in two events at the individual level. She took 30th in the 50 Freestyle with a time of 25.39 and 32nd in the 100 Freestyle, in which she swam a time of 54.77.
Schnur, still just a freshman, took on the 100 Butterfly and landed herself 29th place with a time of 1:00.16.
Senior Keira Veltigian also competed at states. She came in 36th in the diving event. After touching the board on entry, her score was heavily decreased, but she completed her remaining dives.
“I’m so proud of the girls, the hard work that they put in during the two weeks after leagues, and the way they composed themselves at the state meet,” Head Coach Jackie Rank said.
