State Rep. John Reilly (R-Oakland Twp.) was spotted at the Oxford Village Police Station Monday morning. But he wasn’t in any sort of trouble.
He was there to honor the department as part of National Law Enforcement Recognition Day, which was Jan. 9.
Reilly presented Police Chief Mike Solwold with a special tribute signed by himself, State Sen. Rosemary Bayer, Lt. Gov. Garlin Gilchrist II and Gov. Gretchen Whitmer.
“We salute your dedication and strength, which serves as an inspiration to us all,” said Reilly as he read aloud the tribute.
The tribute praised officers for their willingness to accept “the challenges and hazards of the profession” and for the “true courage, leadership, strength of character and teamwork” they exhibit on a daily basis.
“Exemplary public servants rarely receive the recognition they deserve,” the tribute states. “Our communities would not function without committed individuals like you who are willing to devote such considerable time and energy and talent to help others.”
After reading the tribute, Reilly added a few of his own remarks.
“One thing that really stands out to me is the fact that you guys are never off (duty). You’re always on,” he said.
According to Reilly, police officers have a “tough job” these days in light of society’s diminishing “respect for authority.”
“I know it’s not easy, especially with the changing culture . . . You see it in our classrooms. I’m sure you guys see it big time,” he said.
Solwold expressed his gratitude to Reilly for the framed tribute and his visit.
“It’s a great honor,” he said. “It’s nice to be recognized, especially for a small municipality.”
Although receiving accolades is nice, the chief stressed that’s not what motivates him and the officers under his command.
“We do it because we love what we do and we have a passion for it,” he said. “We get up every day and we enjoy coming to work. We enjoy working in this community.”
