Coming back from a tough loss against Ferndale, the Wildcat boys basketball team added two more checks to its win column last week. The boys are now 17-1 overall, tying them for the most wins in a season by any Oxford basketball team. At the season’s beginning, Head Coach Steve Laidlaw said it was their aim to beat that record.
On Feb. 13, the Wildcats crushed Lapeer in a 66-29 game. The game marked a season-low score for Lapeer.
Junior forward Trey Townsend led the boys with 14 points, six blocks and 10 rebounds. Two seniors, guard D’Wavay Turner and forward Michael Raisch, followed Townsend with eight points. Turner also made five rebounds and three assists throughout the night.
Friday night hosted the boys’ Winterfest game. After JJ Bagans and Jillian Beall were crowned king and queen, the Wildcats took a 48-44 win over Seaholm.
Townsend again led the team with 15 points, eight rebounds and three blocks. He was followed by senior guard Logan Coughlin with eight points, four assists and two steals. Two other key players were Raisch with eight points and sophomore guard Zach Townsend with seven.
The boys are now 17-1 overall and 11-1 in the OAA Blue. The Wildcats played Pontiac away on Feb. 19 after the Leader went to press. They’ll be back at it this Thursday against Hazel Park in the Ian Smith Gym on Feb. 21.
