Icers end season with loss

The Oxford-Avondale United hockey season came to an end on Feb. 26. After a season full of fighting hard despite a short roster, the boys fell to Walled Lake-Central Waterford United (WLCW) 7-3 in game one of district play.

Things started strong for OA, with defenseman Coen Hao getting a goal on the board just minutes into the game. He was assisted by forward Jake Billis. But, by the period’s end, WLCW was leading 3-1.

In the second period, OA turned things around with goaltending from Aaron Angelo. Angelo blocked all 11 shots thrown at him in the period. Paired with his efforts, Billis got another on the board for OA, putting the score at 3-2. Billis got assists from defenseman Donovin Thompson and forward Ben Pratt.

In the third period, Billis got the game tied up 3-3 with another goal in which he was assisted by Pratt and Hao. But, WLCW slammed OA with four more goals throughout the period, leaving the boys with a 7-3 loss.

Angelo, in his final high school game, made 45 saves throughout the night. Pratt, the team’s captain and another graduating senior, grabbed two assists.

Billis led the boys offensively with his two goals.

Oxford-Avondale ended the season with a 4-20 record.

With the 2018-19 season behind them, the OA squad will look to continue building on its young roster, full of sophomores, and move forward from a season full of learning opportunities.
