Thanks to an $800 donation from the Oxford Chamber of Commerce, the Oxford Village Police Department now has the money to purchase its fifth and final tactical vest. As a piece of body armor, tactical vests provide a greater degree of personal protection because they can stop a rifle bullet, something the bulletproof vests currently worn by village officers on a daily basis cannot do. The standard vests are designed to protect officers from handgun rounds. The tactical vests also have multiple pockets where officers can store equipment such as additional ammunition, extra pairs of handcuffs and tourniquets. One tactical vest will be kept inside each of the agency’s five vehicles, including the chief’s car, so officers will have quick and easy access to everything they might need in the event of an active shooter situation, be it at a school or inside a local business. The other four vests were purchased with donations from downtown’s Curtis Insurance Agency ($800) and the Oxford Mom Chatter Facebook group ($2,650).
