It seems the Oxford Wildcats boys’ soccer program has an infatuation with the number three. Winning three straight games from Sept. 17-21, the Wildcats have now lost their last three games.

Facing the West Bloomfield Lakers on Tuesday, Sept. 24, a team Oxford is tied with in the OAA White standings at six points, the Wildcats fell, 2-1. Junior Zach Townsend netted Oxford’s only goal of the match.

Having little time to think about the loss to West Bloomfield, the Wildcats hosted the Clarkston Wolves in an OAA crossover matchup on Thursday, Sept. 26. One of the top-four teams in the OAA Red, the Wolves provided quite a test for the Wildcats and they almost answered the call.

Receiving two more goals from Townsend and one from his classmate, Marco Artero, the Wolves were able to hold off the Wildcats, 4-3. Trailing 4-2 in the second half, Townsend’s second goal occurred on a penalty kick, but Oxford could not find the equalizer.

In a make-up of a rained out game originally scheduled for Aug. 20, Oxford rounded out their week by meeting the Avondale Yellow Jackets on Saturday, Sept. 28. Unfortunately for the Wildcats, this one also ended in a one-goal defeat, 1-0.

Currently at the bottom of the OAA White standings at 1-5 (three points), the Avondale game could represent a missed opportunity for the Wildcats to pick up three crucial points as they head down the stretch of OAA play.

“Tough week,” said Head Coach John Thaler.

“All super close matches, could have gone either way in each game.”

After scoring at least three goals in each of their previous three matches, the Wildcats hit that number only once during this stretch (Clarkston).

Looking to find their offense again, the Wildcats hit the road to play the Rochester Falcons on Tuesday, Oct. 1 at 7 p.m. They return home to square off with the Fenton Tigers on Thursday, Oct. 3, also at 7 p.m.

Currently 2-4 (six points) in league play, Oxford is tied with Farmington and West Bloomfield for fifth-place in the OAA White, four points behind the 3-1-1 Seaholm Maples.
