Seeking to snap a three-game losing streak, the Oxford Wildcats boys’ soccer team hit the road to take on the Rochester Falcons on Oct. 1.
A very back-and-forth match, the Falcons ultimately prevailed, 1-0, to extend the Wildcats’ losing streak to four games.
“Great match by both teams,” head coach John Thaler said.
“Our keeper, Tristan Bennett, made a great save on a PK (penalty kick) to keep the score 1-0 in the second half.”
One of the most vital parts of Oxford’s team all season long, Bennett was an All-OAA selection as a sophomore in 2018-19. Based on his strong play this year, another selection could very well be in the cards.
Returning home, the program held their annual Senior Night on Oct. 3 vs. the Fenton Tigers. Another one-goal game, Oxford ended up on the right side of this one, pulling out a 2-1 win. Senior Nick Morawski, one of the team’s most consistent offensive threats, netted both goals for the Wildcats.
Wrapping up their regular season at 2-5 in league play, Oxford finished in a four-way tie for fifth-place in the OAA White. The Wildcats accumulated six league points for their two victories, the same total as Avondale, Farmington and West Bloomfield.
The team’s final regular season match, Oxford traveled to Almont to face the Raiders on Monday, Oct. 7.
Earning the No. 2 seed in the Grand Blanc district, the Wildcats will receive a bye in the first round of Michigan High School Athletic Association (MHSAA) district play. The team will face the winner of Swartz Creek vs. Flint Carman-Ainsworth on Tuesday, Oct. 15 at 7 p.m. in the second round of district competition.
