Preliminary site plan OKed for industrial buildings

Preliminary site plan approval for two new buildings in Oxford Township’s industrial district was granted last week.

In a 5-0 vote, township planning commissioners advanced the Troy-based PK Contracting’s plans to construct an 11,900-square-foot primary structure and a 3,456-square-foot accessory pole barn on a vacant 7.69-acre property located on the west side of Xcelsior Dr., north of Hummer Lake Rd. and west of M-24.

According to the company’s website, PK Contracting offers a full range of pavement marking services for roads, bridges, airports and test tracks. In addition to Troy, the company has offices around Michigan in Kalamazoo, St. Johns, Lake City and Casco. There’s also an office in Lehigh Acres, Florida.

“You see lots of their trucks on the roads,” said Danny Plantus, of the Madison Heights-based Kemp Building and Development, which will be constructing the proposed Oxford buildings.

“They’re a great corporate resident (in) the other communities. They have a first-class operation.”

Plantus explained to commissioners the proposed Oxford buildings would be used for storing equipment and materials, “light maintenance,” offices and a break room. He noted there would probably be 10 to 15 employees working at the proposed site.

Plantus assured commissioners that even though the site would be primarily used for storage purposes, it would not become an eyesore.

“From what I’ve seen (of PK Contracting’s) other facilities, (they’re) very clean, very tidy,” he said. “There’s nothing sitting out there that sits for years and years and years.”

Plantus described PK Contracting sites as “active” and said the proposed Oxford location would be the same.
