Putting finishing touches on strong seasons, the Oxford Wildcats cross country teams competed in a Michigan High School Athletic Association Regional Meet at Goodells County Park on Oct. 26.
Totaling 132 points, the boys’ team finished fifth among 16 schools. Qualifying for the MHSAA State Meet on
Nov. 2, senior Scott Masterson led the Wildcats with his 15:56.6 showing, good for sixth-place.
All finishing in the top-40, junior Zach Patterson (21st), seniors Zach Allion (26th) and Simon Arnold (39th), and freshman Xavier Clark (40th) also scored points for Oxford.
The regular season Oakland Activities Association White champion Stoney Creek Cougars captured the regional title with a score of 43 points.
Running a blistering 15:27.7, Lake Orion Dragons senior Andrew Nolan took home the individual title.
Not to be outdone, the Oxford girls’ team claimed fourth-place by tallying 120 points. Just like Masterson, senior Lauren Methner secured her spot in the state meet by crossing the line in sixth-place.
Narrowly fending off Romeo Bulldogs senior Barret Schettler, sophomore Natalie Schiller was the only other Lady Wildcat to finish in the top-20 at 20:03.5, good for 19th-place.
Seniors Madeline Lukens (26th), Paige Miller (29th) and sophomore Alaine Cusick (40th) were the other contributors to Oxford’s point total.
Completing the sweep for Lake Orion junior Sophie Novak was the top individual performer at 17:59.9. Placing four of their runners inside the top-10, the Romeo Bulldogs won the meet with 46 points.
Taking place at Michigan International Speedway in Brooklyn – the fastest track on the NASCAR circuit – Masterson finished 50th in the state meet at 16:20.2. Posting a time of 19:52.8, Methner was 109th in the girls’ race.
