For a better part of a month residents on Hummer Lake Rd. have complained about flooding just west of Metamora Rd. This week on its FaceBook page Oxford Township announced the road, “is open to traffic again after being closed due to water covering the roadway.”
On Monday, workers from the Road Commission for Oakland County (RCOC) spread asphalt millings in order to
build up the stretch of road where water had been accumulating. The post said, “Workers raised the roadway in this spot by approximately 4 to 5 inches.”
Asphalt millings are produced by taking old asphalt and crushing it into small pieces that are basically the size of gravel. “These millings hold up well to heavy rain and snow. Asphalt millings create a road surface that’s more stable than most types of gravel because unlike gravel, the millings do not contain clay, which gets soupy and mushy when exposed to water,” the announcement said.
While the work was happening, township Supervisor Bill Dunn, Trustee Jack Curtis and township engineer Jim Sharpe met on Hummer Lake Rd. with representatives from the RCOC and Edward C. Levy Co./American Aggregates, which owns property along the road. Going forward, the township, RCOC and Levy will work together to determine the cause of the flooding problem, formulate a long-term solution and implement it.
