Due to the significant drop in taxable values, the township cannot afford to maintain its current staffing levels at the substation over the next few years without completely exhausting its $1.292 million police fund balance and ending up with a deficit.

Before an arena packed with family, friends and teachers, a total of 291 OHS seniors received their diplomas during Sunday afternoon’s commencement ceremony in Rochester Hills. Graduating at the top of their class with perfect 4.0 Grade Point Averages were Corey Young along with his fellow valedictorians Kathleen Brady and Kaitlyn Kimmel.

A small, slow-burning fire that had the potential to turn into a major blaze occurred Wednesday, June 9 at Red Knapp’s American Grill in downtown Oxford. It was stopped in its tracks by an alert restaurant owner, Brett Knapp.

Despite technical difficulties at the start of the 1995 Commencement Tuesday night in the Oxford Field House, hundreds of people were on hand as the Class of ’95 received their diplomas.

Ron Mutch defeated fellow newcomer Robert Winkleman, 378-280, to win the Oxford School Board seat vacated by Dr. William Eschenburg.

Writing poetry is something Oxford resident Lola Lauder had done for herself off and on for about five years. Soon her work will be shared with thousands of readers. Lauder recently won the Editor’s Choice Award from The National Library of Poetry. Her poem “Thinking” on friendship has just been published in a book — “Songs on the Wind” — compiled by the National Library of Poetry.

Tunstead Hardware, which is Michigan’s oldest hardware store, has been sold. After surviving through four wars and numerous depressions during 108 years of serving Oxford area residente, Ralph VanWagoner, who has owned the store since 1946, sold the business to two Oxford businessmen. The new owners are F. A. Baldwin, owner of Baldwin’s Party Store and James A. Sherman, publisher of the Oxford Leader. Neither man will take an active part in running the store.
