Former longtime Oxford resident, Tom Hobbs, 85, passed away peacefully on January 22, 2021 with family members by his side.
Tom was born on July 3, 1935 to Joe and Lottie Hobbs. He was raised in Detroit in a Polish Catholic neighborhood and attended Chadsey High School. At the age of 17, he joined the U.S. Navy and served on a minesweeper during the Korean War. Following completion of his active and
reservist duties with the Navy, he attended and graduated from the Detroit Engineering Institute. Tom worked for many years at Chicago Pneumatics as a Draftsman prior to his retirement.
He enjoyed being an usher at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church and playing euchre with family and friends while living in Michigan.
In 2001, he and his then wife, Jean, relocated to Salt Lake City, UT to be physically closer to their first-born grandchild. He was very proud to be called “DzaDza” by his grandchildren. Some of their favorite memories included being picked up after school by DzaDza, learning how to say “I love you” and “Give me a kiss” in Polish, eating pierogi, dancing to “Who Stole the Kishka,” and seeing him complete a perfect push-up at the age of 80.
In March 2020, as his age and health reduced his independence, Tom moved into an assisted living facility. As COVID-19 precautions secluded him from his family, his emotional and physical health quickly and significantly declined. He moved into the Salt Lake City Veteran’s Home in December 2020.
Tom is survived by Jean Hobbs, daughter- Pam Hobbs Tiede (Jeff), son-Matt Hobbs, grandson-Zach Tiede, granddaughters-Zoe Tiede and Tiffany Hobbs, and sister-Virginia Gabriau (Lake Orion, MI). Many surviving extended family members currently reside in the Detroit metropolitan area.
In lieu of flowers, please make a donation in Tom’s memory to the Wounded Warrior Project. Words of condolence can be sent to Hobbs/Tiede Family, 5910 S. Whitewater Circle, SLC, UT 84121. Memorial services will be held at a later date in both Utah and Michigan.
