Local residents Sam and Aldona Chojnacki, who are orginally from Poland, knew they wanted to do something to help Ukrainian refugees. Together they decided to organize a day of pierogi making, and then sell the Polish dumplings.
This past Saturday at LakePoint Community Church on W. Drahner Road, 16 volunteers showed up and worked from 8 a.m to 5 p.m., making perogies from scratch. When it was all said and done 950 pierogies were made raising over $2,000 to be donated.
“We are proud of this community, the financial support as well as local volunteers that came to make this happen. Oxford Strong,” Sam said.
He said both their parents are still in Poland. Aldona parents own a bed and breakfast there and decided to shut it down to host as many refugees as possible. “We are raising funds to help offset cost of the operation and lost revenue — which is their main source of income,” he said.
